Belle
Belle da Costa Green was born in 1883 (or 1879) in Washington, DC (or Virginia). She was African American (but claimed to be Portuguese). Her father was an accomplished law professor and civil rights activist, but she worked very hard to change her backstory and distance herself from him. In 1905, she began working at JP Morgan’s library. She was a specialist in rare manuscripts and became his trusted buyer of rare books, manuscripts, and art overseas. She focused on making these rare finds accessible to the public. She is the best known and highest paid librarian. At his death, JP Morgan left her $50,000 in his will, the equivalent of 1.5 million in today’s figures. While this more than took care of her into retirement, she continued to work for his children. The Morgan Library staged an exhibit of over 250 of the best items procured by Belle.
Belle is 12” tall, not counting those perky ears. She is constructed and dressed in cashmere. She is stuffed with recycled denim and wears a vintage handkerchief blouse.
