Florence Wald was Dean of the Yale School of Nursing when Cicely Saunders came to lecture on her pain management protocol for cancer patients. She invited Saunders to be a guest professor at Yale, and together they hosted the first American Conference on End of Life Care. She left her position at Yale to do full time research and advocacy for the field of hospice care. In 1974, a home based program call the Connecticut Hopsice was founded by Ms. Wald.
