Georgette
Wife and muse to Surrealist painter, Rene Magritte, Georgette first met her husband when she was only 12 years old. They married 8 years later, after being separated by war and reunited by chance encounter at the Brussels Botanical Garden. It is said that she is responsible for a rift between French and Belgian Surrealists. The Magrittes attended a dinner party at which Andre Breton, a leader of the French Surrealist community, insulted Georgette’s choice of jewelry. Rene, ever devoted to his wife, defended her and they stayed until the end of the party; but the two men did not speak for eight years. The Magrittes never had children, but they had a series of well loved Pomeranians that were each named LouLou. Georgette outlived her husband by 20 years. She maintained their home exactly as it was on the day he died, and turned it into a museum that is still open for exhibit in Brussels.
Georgette is approximately 13” tall. She is constructed and dressed in recycled wool suiting. She is stuffed with recycled denim.
